I just did a bit of a read-up on the history of some of the characters. Something i found interesting was that Alcheon's father while of "sacred bone" (aka royal family) married a lady of "true bone" (one rank lower) so that his descendants wont have to be involved in the political struggles.

Yet in the end, after the ruling family died, there are no longer anyone who can ascend the throne, hence being the highest ranked official (and of "true bone" linage) Alcheon was looked upon to take over. Still, he chose not to and left altogether, changing his name from the royal name Kim to So.

Also, after reading up, i guess i kinda like how the show portrayed him. Declaring that he does not want to be involved in the political strife among the different factions but instead just chooses to serve who and what he believes belongs to the righteous path. Really now, the lack of political ambition feels kinda like a family thing huh? Still, interesting tidbit of information i guess.
